What is new at San Fernando Cemetery III?

by Paul Maldonado

Recently, we underwent major renovation to our crematory. The unit was relined with brick and inspected for proper operation to ensure uninterrupted service. As we draw nearer to the new millennium, we are seeing a marked increase in the selection of cremation as a means of final disposition. In 1993 we averaged 93 cremations, in 1994 we averaged 167 cremations, and in 1995 we averaged 119 cremations, 1996 we averaged 169, but then in 1997 we averaged 306 cremations. I believe that this year the number averaged will exceed last year’s figures. With this growing trend, it is necessary that we keep up to date with the rules and regulations that govern our state with respect to cremation. We believe that we must be prepared for this demand and are doing everything possible to keep up with it. We now have two certified operators trained in crematory operations. Soon three more certified operators will be added to this list. The goal being to have every employee certified in the operation of our crematory.

Along with certification, our employees understand the importance and respect that is to be given to cremated remains. The cremains, or cremated remains, are afforded the same respect that is given to the corporeal remains of a human body. This means the way we prepare and handle the cremated remains, including they way they are carried. Although the entombment of the cremated remains in a mausoleum or columbarium is encouraged, they may also be buried in a grave similar to the more common casket burial. Memorializing of the deceased, whether they are entombed or if they have been buried in a grave is both appropriate and encouraged. Our cemetery also has a wide variety of colors of granite stones for selection.

We work very closely with the different funeral homes who have selected our crematory for their services. Part of this service also allows us to have a wide selection of urns on display for purchase. We also have urn vaults that can be purchased to provide the extra protection for the urn in cases of in ground burials or entombments. We have a variety of colors, materials, shapes and sizes. We have even added a selection for infant cremations.

We wholeheartedly encourage the christian tradition of offering prayers on behalf of the deceased loved one. Mass is celebrated at each of the cemeteries within the archdiocese on November 2, the feast of All Souls in commemoration of all the faithful departed. Masses can also be celebrated on the anniversaries of death or other significant times. Our Catholic Cemeteries are ready to assist you in this respect and you may feel free to call us with any questions or information you may require.
