| Service, Our Commitment by
Elsa Frizzell
While most businesses can complete a transaction and file the sale or service away as
past history, those of us at the San Fernando II Cemetery must see the completion of the
service arrangements and internment as the beginning of a relationship with the family and
friends of the deceased. This is, of course, unique to our profession, and we view it as a
profound commitment to the loved ones left behind.
Not only must the obvious services and maintenance be seen to, regular care of the
grounds, security of the premises, maintenance of the memorials, etc. The long term
considerations, perhaps arising many years after the original interment, must also be seen
to, such as shifting of the earth over time affecting the condition of the grave and/or
monument, trees that were just saplings growing large and majestic with the root systems
that may also affect the position of the memorials and monuments, and normal erosion
through natural forces that may expose the concrete foundation of the memorials, as well
as the weathering of wind and rain over the years. The continued maintenance of roads and
pathways also must be seen to. More recently, sadly, there has also been the vandalism and
the actual thefts of gravesite marble sculptures for resale as "art" or
"antiques".
We here at San Fernando Cemetery II have done and will continue to do our best to address
all these ongoing concerns with the dedication and dignity expected by those whose loved
ones have found their final resting place with us.
As we do so, we ask for the patience and understanding common to our faith from our
families, many of whom are going through the most difficult time of their lives with the
loss of their loved one. We truly seek to daily affirm our commitment to the never
ending and truly unique promise made to those who rest here, as well as those
who cared for them in life. We respectfully ask for your help and understanding in our
mission.
