Whats happening at San Fernando Cemetery 1
It has been a long wait, but after almost 170 years of operation, numerous plans and considerable obstacles, renovations to one of the archdioceses oldest cemeteries has begun. Surveying crews started marking out the 11 acres of burial grounds for new roads surfacing throughout the site earlier this month. This is the first step in a long range multi-level plan to upgrade the condition of this significant historical site. The new roadways will not only enhance the appearance of the cemetery but will also afford easier and safer access to all the grounds. The new roads and curbing will also act as a safeguard by preventing individuals from inadvertently crossing over unmarked grave sites. This reconstruction effort is not new. Plans for all levels of renovation have been in the works for many years. In many cases, the delay has been financial restrictions but that has never deterred us from our firm commitment to stewardship of all of the cemetery properties. We consider this just another step in the ministerial process of maintaining our Catholic cemeteries in perpetuity. Look for our progress reports on this endeavor in upcoming articles. Where is San Fernando Cemetery 1, you might ask? It is at 1100 Colorado (corner of Colorado and Vera Cruz Sts.)
