A museum of faith — Beautiful artwork fills
San Fernando Cemetery 2
by Albert J. Sanchez,
Superintendent of Cemeteries

Do you know where you can find some of the most beautiful statues and religious artwork features all in one place and right here in San Antonio? I’m not referring to the Witte or McNay, but our (your) very own San Fernando Cemetery 2.

The fact that we Catholics are often identified by our devotions to the saints is no big secret. I was reminded of this the other day when I gave a brief tour of our cemetery to a vendor from out of town who told me our cemetery "sure looks CATHOLIC." He meant it in a most sincere way and it got me to thinking about how right he was. Sculpted out of the finest marble, granite and bronze, the twenty plus pieces featured here include the Good Shepherd (bronze over 10 feet tall), Our Lady of Fatima, the Stations of the Cross, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ferdinand (our namesake), La Virgen de Gaudalupe, St. Joseph, The Crucifixion, Jesus with the Little Children, San Martin de Porres, the Four Evangelists and our most recent commission of the Holy Family. Most, if not all, of our features are exclusive to our cemetery especially those depictions of the saints and other Biblical scenes in granite and bronze.

We consider these beautiful pieces of artwork symbols of our faith to the world and we pray that they offer some consolation and peace to those who are grieving. Please come by today, take a walking tour or drive around and enjoy our "museum of faith." San Fernando Cemetery 2 is located at 746 Castroville Road, bordered by Cupples Rd. and General McMullen. We are open 365 days a year from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
