24 TODAY’S CATHOLIC CEMETERY FOCUS JULY 17, 1998

Call us anytime — our purpose is to serve you

by Albert J. Sanchez,
Superintendent,
Catholic Cemeteries of San Antonio

I read a recent letter in the Your Turn section of the San Antonio Express-News that added to an already very frustrating day I was having. The woman who wrote the letter shared some emotions concerning the condition of her father’s grave at one of our cemeteries, San Fernando III. Her dissatisfaction and possible anger with us was obvious in the letter and struck a chord in me as I read it. I tried to locate her through our records and phone logs, but to no avail. I was frustrated because I simply wanted to say to her, I’m sorry for what you are going through and please tell me how I can help solve the problem and help her with her concerns. What concerns me most is that perhaps we haven’t done our job so well. I’m not talking about the upkeep of the grounds and the brown grass that this drought has created, but what I am talking about is making sure families know they can call us whenever they have a problem or concern no matter how small or large.

Our office numbers are as follows:

• San Fernando I and II, (210) 432-2303 Our commitment to those families who entrust us with the care of their deceased loved ones is forever.
That’s what cemeteries are for and that is the commitment of our staff.
• Holy Cross, (210) 651-6011
• San Fernando III, (210) 432-2364

All our offices have either voice mail or an answering machine so leave a message if it’s after hours.

I sincerely can’t remember speaking to this woman or the legal threats she mentions having made, but I do remember that we are here for service to families who are in need. The service we render is not limited to just today when burial arrangements are being made, but forever!

That’s right, forever. Our commitment to those families who entrust us with the care of their deceased loved ones is forever. That’s what cemeteries are for and that is the commitment of our staff.

Sure we make mistakes, but they are never purposely intended to hurt anyone and shouldn’t we have the opportunity to correct them if we can? I made sure the entire staff of our cemeteries read the letter in hopes that they would be reminded of our purpose here and to realize that though we are not always perfect when it comes to dealing with families, we should always strive to be. Remember our commitment to serve you and your family is forever!
